The Bahamas

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is a free state located in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Cuba, northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands and east of the peninsula of Florida, U.S.A. The word Bahamas comes from the Spanish words 'baja mar' which means shallow sea. The Bahamas consist of 29 islands, 661 cays, and 2,387 islets.  Its total land area is 13,939 km2 (5,382 sq mi), with an estimated population of 330,000.

Its capital is Nassau, the largest city and commercial centre. The city has a population of 248,948, 70 percent of the entire population of The Bahamas.  the major airport for The Bahamas,  the Lynden Pindling International Airport, is located about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Nassau city centre, and has daily flights to major cities in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
